When ice melts on land, it flows into the ocean and can cause sea level to
rise. However, when ice melts floating on the ocean (such as the ice at the
north pole), it doesn't cause sea level to change. Can you explain why?

Answers

When ice melts floating on the ocean, such as sea ice in the Arctic, it does not cause sea level to rise.

This is because the ice is already displacing its weight in the water, so when it melts, it simply adds its own mass to the water. The reason for this is due to a principle in physics called Archimedes' principle.

This principle states that the buoyant force acting on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. In other words, when an object is placed in a fluid, it will displace a volume of fluid equal to its own volume. The buoyant force of the fluid on the object will then be equal to the weight of the fluid displaced.

In the case of floating sea ice, the ice is already displacing its own weight in seawater, so when it melts, it simply adds its own mass to the water without changing the overall volume of the water. Therefore, there is no net change in sea level when floating sea ice melts.

However, the melting of land-based ice, such as glaciers and ice sheets, does contribute to sea level rise because this ice is not already displacing its weight in the ocean. As it melts, the water flows into the ocean, increasing its overall volume and causing sea level to rise.

Can you help me with the 5 questions listed in the pictures below? Please and thank you. Will mark BRAINLIEST!!!

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

1. The crisis the people in cape town were facing was a major drought that affected animals, plants, and people.

2. The crisis was caused by 3 years of barely any rainfall and the people using the same amount of water they had been using for a while. Naturally, things caught up and the people were using to much water without enough to supply.

3. The government and local authorities started setting laws to restrict water usage. So businesses and citizens had to restrict water usage very quickly. At one point they said they would run out of water completely, that made reality set in for people. People started setting out separate buckets and jars to collect water for drinking, bathing, and watering their plants for food. Everyone stopped using their baths.

People removed eucalyptus trees so water would start running down the dams.

Businesses had to manage the water even more carefully, they had to make sure that how much water they were using was under the limit but still accommodating either the plants or the people or the animals.

4. The crisis was ultimately resolved when the rain came again and people kept their same restrictions for a little bit to catch up and then they started getting more water gradually but still making sure they weren't using too much.

5. Now that the crisis is over, I think it will have have a lasting impact on the people of Cape Town. I think mentally it made them more aware of what could happen and made them more precarious. I think if there was less rainfall for a bit again they would start going into preparation mode, but this time, know more about how to reverse it and live with it. Like in the video, it showed the hotels, people, and businesses have started monitoring the water usage again and installing things to catch extra water and making sure there is a backup water containers to avoid this in the future. I also think because of all the restrictions it will affect the land for quite a while, you can't just replant trees and vegetables, and regrow all the foods businesses produced with a snap of a finger, it takes time, seasons, months, so consequently as the land is affected so are the people.

I think the crisis affected the people's mindset by changing their outlook on water and showed them how to be more frugal with water.

(you can change this up and put it in your own words if you want, idk, I hope this is good enough :) )

Claim

Write a sentence that states what you found out about the scientific question you just investigated. Provide enough detail so that a friend who did not do the experiment could learn from your description.

Evidence

Provide and describe scientific evidence from your data table that supports your written claim. Remember to provide enough detail so that a friend who did not do the experiment could learn from your description.

Reasoning

Explain why your evidence (what you wrote in Box 2) supports your claim (what you wrote in Box 1). Also, explain the scientific principles behind your reasoning. Remember to provide enough detail so that a friend who did not do the experiment could learn from your description

Answers

Answer:

Claim: Increasing the amount of foliage does not lead to an increase in the final number of slinquettes with red, short fur.

Evidence: The data table shows the results of eight trials where the amount of foliage was manipulated. In all trials, regardless of the amount of foliage (whether "lots" or "some"), the final number of slinquettes with red, short fur remained at 0. There were no instances where increasing the foliage resulted in an increase in the population of slinquettes with red, short fur.

Reasoning: The evidence from the data table supports the claim that increasing the amount of foliage does not lead to an increase in the final number of slinquettes with red, short fur. This suggests that the presence or absence of foliage does not have a significant impact on the population of slinquettes with red, short fur.

Based on the provided data, it is reasonable to infer that factors other than foliage, such as temperature, fur color mutation, and fur length mutation, may have a stronger influence on the population dynamics of slinquettes. These factors could be responsible for the observed patterns in the data.

It's important to note that the reasoning provided here is based solely on the given data and analysis. In a real scientific investigation, additional factors, experimental controls, and statistical analysis would be required to draw definitive conclusions.

Explanation:

The gut microbiome has a fundamental role during the first years of life. Newborns 'contaminate' with microbes from contact with family members, and, subsequently, these microorganisms act to colonize their gut microbiome. Metagenomics analyses showed that microbiome diversity may be very high among infants and early microbial colonization has been shown to be critical during this process. The gut microbiota has critical functions which include, among others, nutrient homeostasis, mineral absorption, enzymatic activity, synthesis of amino acids, etc. It has been reported that early microbial colonization can even modulate target gene expression through the alteration of epigenetic marks (i.e., differential DNA methylation patterns).

in fruit flies, there are molecules in the egg that determine the future head and tail ends of the animal. what occurs when mrna from the head end of an embryo is injected into the tail end of an early embryo?

Answers

When mRNA from the head end of an embryo is injected into the tail end of an early embryo the head end grows normally and some head structures emerge at the tail end.

There are roughly 100 egg chambers in the fruit fly ovary. "Nurse cells" are located in 15 of each chamber. These encircle the oocyte, or egg cell, which eventually gives rise to a young fruit fly. The nurse cells create RNA molecules, which are then transferred to the oocyte. The laborious process of creating an embryo begins with the fertilization of the fruit-fly egg. A distinct collection of cells emerges during the fruit fly embryo's development, pinching off at the back. These cells, known as germ cells, will later create the animal's eggs or sperm. Only in the posterior of the embryo do the germ cells develop, and are directed to do so by a group of mRNA and protein molecules. Two localized mRNAs are present in the unfertilized Drosophila egg: bicoid in the anterior regions and oskar in the posterior regions.  The Oskar protein aids in organizing the polar granules' formation in the posterior cytoplasm. The pole cells are formed by the nuclei that enter this area and branch of the embryo's posterior end.  Polarized microtubules grow from the oocyte nucleus toward the posterior plasm during the development of the Drosophila egg. Oskar mRNA interacts with adaptor proteins, which then work with microtubules to move the RNA to the posterior plasm.

To pass from the blood into the capsular space in the renal corpuscle, the substance must pass through the capillary endothelium, the basement membrane, and the podocytes.

The renal corpuscle is the initial part of the nephron in the kidney where blood filtration takes place. The glomerular capillaries in the renal corpuscle are surrounded by three layers: the capillary endothelium, the basement membrane, and the podocytes.

The capillary endothelium is the innermost layer of the glomerular capillaries and consists of a single layer of endothelial cells. The basement membrane is a thin layer of extracellular matrix that surrounds the capillary endothelium. The podocytes are specialized cells that have foot-like projections called foot processes that wrap around the capillaries and form filtration slits.

As blood flows through the glomerular capillaries, small molecules such as water, electrolytes, and waste products are able to pass through the capillary endothelium and basement membrane. However, larger molecules such as proteins and blood cells are generally too large to pass through these layers.

The podocytes further regulate the filtration process by controlling the size of the filtration slits between their foot processes. This helps to prevent larger molecules from passing through into the capsular space.

according to the theory of common descent, each species on earth today should

Answers

According to the theory of common descent, each species on earth today should be related through a common ancestor. In other words, all living organisms are believed to have evolved from a single-celled organism over time and through successive generations.

Would you like to know more about the theory of common descent?

The theory of common descent postulates that all species share a common ancestor, and this can be seen in the similarities in DNA between organisms. It was proposed by Charles Darwin in the 19th century as part of his theory of evolution and has since been supported by numerous lines of evidence, including fossil records, comparative anatomy, and molecular biology.

In essence, the theory of common descent asserts that all living things are related and have evolved from a single organism. It also implies that there is a continuity of life on earth, as all species are connected by a process of descent with modification. Through this process, organisms change and adapt to their environments, leading to the evolution of new species over time.

- Enzymes are protein molecules that are needed to break down macronutrients: True

Initially most weight loss from a low carbohydrate diet can be attributed to fat loss: True

Initially, most weight loss from a low carbohydrate diet can be attributed to fat loss. This is because, in the absence of carbohydrates, the body shifts to using fat for energy. Fat is the body's main fuel source, so the more you burn, the more weight you lose.

Enzymes are protein molecules that are needed to break down macronutrients: True

Enzymes are protein molecules that are needed to break down macronutrients. Each enzyme is specific to a particular macronutrient. For example, amylase breaks down carbohydrates, protease breaks down protein, and lipase breaks down fat. Without enzymes, macronutrients would not be absorbed and utilized by the body.

Sperm are formed in the seminiferous tubules, which are tightly coiled tubes located within the testes. The testes are a pair of male reproductive glands located in the scrotum, which produce both sperm and testosterone. Sperm are then transported from the testes to the epididymis, where they mature and are stored until ejaculation.

The seminiferous tubules are lined with special cells called Sertoli cells, which provide support and nourishment to developing sperm cells. Sperm are formed through a process called spermatogenesis, which involves several stages of cell division and maturation. Once mature, the sperm are released into the lumen of the seminiferous tubules and are transported out of the testes through the epididymis.
